Biomechanical Assessment. Many common lower limb complaints can be related to biomechanical dysfunction (such as poor posture of the foot and leg). Poor alignment of the feet and legs can often disrupt normal knee function and hip alignment, as well as increase forces placed on the muscles in the lower back. This can be treated through the use of moulded or custom made orthotics and insoles.
The assessment is generally carried out to measure the degree of pronation. Pronation is the natural inward roll of the foot as the lateral part of the heel strikes the ground. This acts as a shock absorber for the leg and body. Biomechanics aids to match the amount of the pronation with the correct orthotic or insole. This in turn will result in optimum energy expenditure of the lower limb, which will reduce risk of injury and improve running or even walking efficiently. The assessment is carried out with both visual and physical examination. The subject may be asked to spend a few minutes on the treadmill before a prescription is made for the correct device. |
